Development and casting

Puli was director S. J. Suryaah's dream project.[6] Initially he planned to make the movie with Akshay Kumar in Hindi[citation needed] and later with Vijay in Tamil[6] and he sent bound scripts to both superstars. But both the projects did not happen. The storyline was also discussed with Malayalam actor Suresh Gopi.[7] Later, after the confirmation from pawan kalyan, it was finalised to make in Telugu with Pawan Kalyan . Hansika Motwani was originally signed to play the heroine[8] but was replaced by Nikeesha Patel, who made her acting debut in this film.[9] The film was sent to the censor board on 4 September and received an A certificate.[10]

Filming

The movie was shot in various parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, as well as in Malaysia, Singapore, Bangkok and Dubai.[11] The filming was almost completed by May 2010, but the songs were shot from 18 May onwards only.[12]

Title

The movie was originally titled "Komaram Puli". "Komaram" was taken from the surname of the Gond martyr Komaram Bheem, who fought against the erstwhile Asaf Jahi dynasty for the liberation of Hyderabad State.[13] However, following the objections by Komaram Sony Rao, grandson of Komaram Bheem, and also by a section of Telangana Joint Action Committee activists who called for a boycott of the film, the movie was renamed with title "Puli" on the second day of its release.[4][5] The soundtrack album is titled "Komaram Puli".

Release and reception

The film was released worldwide with 950 prints in 1250 theatres,[14][15] a record of sorts for a Telugu film. The film's release faced a minor roadblock in the form of its title.[16][dead link] The film critic from NDTV warned the audience by saying "watch the film at your own risk. Its a big-budget film with a solid casting. It has got some extraordinarily directed action scenes."[17] The background score by A. R. Rahman and camerawork by Binod Pradhan were appreciated and many critics rated them as the highlight of the movie.[18] It was thought to be a failure at the box office.
The makers of the film re-edited it due to very poor reviews and re-released the shortened version on 15 September 2010.[2] The final outcome however was disappointing. The film was declared as a flop at the box office.

Soundtrack

The film features a soundtrack consisting of 6 songs composed by A. R. Rahman and lyrics penned by Chandrabose. The highly anticipated soundtrack album was released on 11 July 2010 by Sony Music.[19] The release rights of the album was purchased by Sony Music for INR 20 million.[20] The audio was launched by K Rosaiah, Rahman and his mother Kareema Begum in a function held at H.I.C.C Novotel, Hyderabad.[19][21] The function was attended by K Rosaiah, S. J. Suryaah, Allu Aravind, Pawan Kalyan, Nikeesha Patel, Shriya Saran, A. R. Rahman, Chandrabose, Anand Sai, Singanamala Ramesh, S. R. Murthy and many others.[22] The soundtrack got overwhelming response and became a hot seller. The audio sales reached a total of 300,000 of CDs in the first three days, which is an all-time record in Telugu film history.[23]
The picturisation of the songs was also noted. Two songs were choreographed by Bollywood choreographer Ahmed Khan.[24] The songs he choreographed were "Power Star" (Pawan Kalyan's introduction song) and "Dochey" (an item number featuring Shriya Saran).[24] The songs were filmed in two schedules at Annapurna Studios beginning from 18 May.[12] Of the six songs written for the film, four songs were directly included in the film while the remaining two served as background songs.[11] Lyricist Chandrabose collaborated with Rahman for the second time through this film. He took almost three months to write the song "Amma Thale", while all it took to write the song "Maaralente" was 90 minutes.[11] A. R. Rahman's original score also received critical praise. Rahman collaborated with artists from three European countries to re-record the background score.[11]

DESCRIPTION

Venkataratnam Naidu is a young boy who lives with his younger half-brother (Ajay), stepfather Naidu (Nagineedu) and mother (Suhasini Maniratnam) in Kondaveedu which is a village in Guntur District. His stepfather is always partial towards his half-brother which constantly angers Venkataratnam. He starts to not care about what other people think about him and renames himself after "Gabbar Singh", a popular antagonist character from Sholay. His anger towards his brother and father grows and he runs away from home. His stepfather, Naidu catches him and joins him in a boarding school away from Kondaveedu.
21 years later, a scene shows a gang of robbers trying to steal money from a bank in Kondaveedu, when Gabbar Singh (Pawan Kalyan), now a cop, tries to recover the money by beating up the robbers. It is revealed that Gabbar Singh is now posted as a C.I. (Circle Inspector) for the Kondaveedu region. His anger towards his brother and Naidu remains the same and lives separately from them. He wants to live with his mother in his new house, but she instead wants him to stay with her and Naidu. Ajay is a gambling addict and has loans all over the village. Gabbar Singh falls in love with a handicraft vendor named Bhagya Lakshmi (Shruti Haasan), whom he chances upon during a police raid that he conducts against gambling.
It is revealed that the robbers who tried to steal are actually the henchmen of an upcoming politician named Siddhappa Naidu (Abhimanyu Singh). He with the help of his uncle (Tanikella Bharani) want to be a MLA of Kondaveedu. He meets Gabbar Singh and tries to appreciate him for catching the robbers. Gabbar Singh flatly refuses and tells Siddhappa that he actually knows who he is and tells him to behave himself.
Angered by Gabbar Singh's response, Siddhappa Naidu sends goons to disrupt the market yard in Kondaveedu. Gabbar Singh confronts the goons and defeats them with ease to reopen the market yard. Even more enraged, Siddhappa now plans to kill Gabbar Singh but his uncle instead advises him to speak with the Minister (Rao Ramesh) about transferring Gabbar Singh out of Kondaveedu. Siddhappa and his uncle meet the minister, who simply denies their request stating that Gabbar Singh is a sincere and honest cop and transferring him during the elections would be bad for the party. He also advises Siddhappa to make peace with Gabbar Singh or it would hurt his political aspirations.
Meanwhile, Gabbar Singh meets Bhagya Lakshmi and proposes marriage. She rejects it saying that she has to look after her father (Kota Srinivasa Rao), who is always drunk and she cannot marry while he is alive. Gabbar Singh then comes home to find his mother dead. He goes to his stepfather to make peace, as he is the only family left. His stepfather rejects and despises him as an outcast. Gabbar Singh is then attacked at the handicraft exhibition by Siddhappa's men, when he is with Bhagya Lakshmi; he kills all of them in a fight and goes to Siddhappa's house. He confronts Siddhappa and warns him to stop bothering him and tells him that he will not allow Siddhappa to become a MLA for Kondaveedu.
Provoked by Siddhappa's men, Gabbar Singh's brother hits one of his creditors brutally and injuring him. Siddhappa calls the police station to warn them about the fight. Gabbar Singh beats up his brother in public, thus disgracing him. Siddhappa decides to take advantage of the situation and suspend Gabbar Singh. He takes Gabbar Singh's brother and his father to the police station. But Naidu resolves the situation by accepting an apology from Gabbar Singh. Angered by the outcome, Siddhappa tells Gabbar Singh that something big will happen in the next 24 hours and tells him to stop it if he can. Gabbar Singh interrogates the henchmen of Siddhappa and finds out that Siddhappa arranged the marriage of Bhagya lakshmi with a local merchant by paying her father a lot of money. Gabbar Singh goes to the wedding and confronts Bhagya Lakshmi whether she loves him or not. Bhagya Lakshmi reveals her love and Gabbar marries her in the same event.

He offers help and money and in exchange asks him to work for his elections. Siddhappa orders him to deliver a cellphone and a box of sweets to the Minister's house. But, unknown to him, a bomb is placed in the sweet box. After he leaves the house, it explodes, killing the Minister. Knowing that it was Gabbar Singh's brother who did the blast, the police commissioner (Jaya Prakash Reddy) suspends Gabbar Singh. Gabbar Singh confronts his stepfather Naidu tells him about his brother. Naidu suffers a heart attack after hearing the news and is hospitalized. DESCRIPTION

Badri (Pawan Kalyan) is an ad agency director whose parents are settled in the USA. He has a love called Vennela (Renu Desai), who is a close family friend of Badri's family. Their parents want these two to tie the knot. Badri and Vennela are whiling away time, as Vennela did not finish her grads yet.
On one of those romantic evenings, Vennela tells Badri that she loves him very much. But, at the same time, she does not find the same sincerity in Badri's love. She challenges him: No other girl on earth would probably love him more than she does. Badri, who gets carried away in arguments, takes up the challenge immediately. Vennela shows a beautiful girl coming out of the temple and asks him to approach that girl. Then Vennela goes to the US to spend time with Badri's parents. Badri gets the info of the new girl in no time and finds out that her name is Sarayu. She is a pampered-yet-docile sister of Nanda (Prakash Raj). After a few tries he is able to corner Sarayu to the extent that she expresses her love and puts forward a marriage proposal, for which Badri gives no response.
Meantime, Vennela is back and can see the chemistry between Sarayu and Badri. She starts regretting the bet with Badri. Badri, too, is torn. Nanda, who is excessively fond of his sister Sarayu, guns for the blood of Badri, as he knows that Badri and Vennela are destined for marriage.
As we head for a simple looking yet extremely gripping climax, we have a very heart-touching performance in store.
